Checkers is a game for 2 players. The aim is to capture all of your opponent's pieces. It is played on the dark squares of the board using 12 white and 12 black pieces. The aim is to capture as many of your opponent's pieces as possible or block them so that your opponent cannot make a move.
Chess is a game for 2 players. It is played on a chessboard made up of 64 equal-sized light and dark squares. The board is placed between the opponents so that the square in the right-hand corner of each player is white. The pieces, a King, Queen, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks and eight Pawns, should be placed on the board in the appropriate way. The opponents choose or draw the colour of the pieces they will play with. The game is always started by the white pawns. Players take turns moving their pieces according to the rules for each piece. If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent's piece, it captures that piece. Check is a threat to capture the king and must be averted by the opponent on the next move; the king cannot be captured. Checkmate, putting the opponent's king in check with no defence available, ends the game and means victory for the player delivering checkmate.
A draw occurs when:
- the players have agreed on this result;
- there is stalemate on the board: one side cannot make a legal move and its king is not in check;
- neither side has the resources needed to win, even theoretically;
- there is a so-called dead position, in which neither player can checkmate even with the best play.
At the request of either side, a game may also end in a draw when:
- the same position has appeared on the board three times;
- one side gives perpetual check;
- fifty moves have been made without moving a pawn or capturing a piece.
